“For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God who said ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” II Corinthians 4:5-6

Advent week 1 at HBC
This year for Advent I'll be preaching through the four songs in the Gospel of Luke. This week will be Mary's Magnificat. Luke records Mary's amazing song in chapter 1 starting in verse 46:
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
Mary's song establishes our hearts firmly on the foundation that the Advent of Christ is about the glory of God in our salvation. Advent is not about special "Black Friday" deals. It is not about giving, or receiving. It is not about college football bowls, eggnog, Santa, or Christmas break. It is about Christ and His great redemption. A redemption that humbly began in a manger, was paid for on a criminal's cross, completed through the resurrection and will one day be consummated at his Second Advent!
During the craziness of the first week of Advent, may we remember that our lives were made to magnify the Lord and to rejoice in God our Savior!
